MAUI
A Step Change in Medical Imaging
MAUI was founded with the goal to dramatically advance medical imaging.
In 2006 MAUI brought together experts in sonar, radar, electrical engineering, and medical imaging to innovate the cumbersome, expensive, and challenging approaches to imaging technology in clinical care. After years of research, the science led them to invent MAUI’s Computed Echo Tomography (CET).
MAUI’s hardware and proprietary algorithms are secured by more than 160 U.S. and international patents with over 30 more pending.
MAUI’s latest, FDA cleared product, the K3900 imaging system is being tested by the Department of Defense to aid military medical personnel in diagnosing and treating traumatic injury in austere environments. MAUI is actively engaged in clinical studies that show the impact its products can have across trauma diagnosis, critical care, neurology, and interventional radiology.

Don Specht
MAUI Imaging was founded by Don and Dave Specht in 2006 with a vision for developing an ultrasound system capable of imaging through and around barriers. This revolutionary advancement would bring about a fundamental shift in the utilization of medical imaging in diagnostics and interventional procedures.
Don Specht was a forward-thinking visionary with a unique combination of expertise in medical imaging, AI, and aerospace. This diverse knowledge provided Don with the insight that applying the engineering principles used in multiple aperture telescopes to existing ultrasound technology could one day revolutionize medical imaging. He was initially joined by co-inventor Ken Brewer, a former naval officer and expert on sonar — and original Chairman Joe Digiovanni, a member of the “Old Crows Nest” because of his expertise in radar. The collaboration resulted in utilizing the best parts of signal processing from all three modalities to deploy medical ultrasound in transformationally better ways.
Prior to co-founding MAUI Imaging, Don was an early employee at one of the first medical ultrasound companies. He also co-founded R2 Technology, which was the first AI-oriented company, dedicated to using neural networks for the detection of cancer in mammograms. Don later spent two decades as a senior scientist at Lockheed Martin working on space telescopes, where he twice earned the Lockheed Robert E. Gross Award for Technical Excellence. Don earned an M.S. from Carnegie-Mellon University and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
Since Don’s passing in 2019, Dave has continued to lead MAUI toward accomplishing its mission.
